Stein Sperling is pleased to announce that Millard Bennett, David Driscoll, Ann Jakabcin, Paul Stein and Steve Widdes were recently selected by their peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® 2013 (Copyright 2012 by Woodward/White, Inc., of Aiken, SC). Mr. Bennett and Ms. Jakabcin were first-time recipients of this honor.

Since it was first published in 1983, Best Lawyers has become universally regarded as the definitive guide to legal excellence. Because Best Lawyers is based on an exhaustive peer-review survey in which more than 36,000 leading attorneys cast almost 4.4 million votes on the legal abilities of other lawyers in their practice areas, and because lawyers are not required or allowed to pay a fee to be listed, inclusion in Best Lawyers is considered a singular honor. Corporate Counsel magazine has called Best Lawyers “the most respected referral list of attorneys in practice.”

Millard Bennett was recognized in the field of Commercial Litigation.  He serves as managing partner of Stein Sperling and as Co-Chair of the firm’s Business Law department. Mr. Bennett's practice is concentrated in the areas of business organization, business ownership conflicts, conflict resolution, transition of ownership interests and civil litigation. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Cyrus Katzen Foundation, Inc., and has been recognized by the Montgomery County, Maryland Bar Foundation as a Bar Leader.

David Driscoll was again recognized as a top lawyer in Criminal Defense (Non-White-Collar). He is Co-Chair of the firm’s Criminal Law practice group and a senior member of the Family Law and Civil Litigation groups. Mr. Driscoll is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, has served two terms on the Executive Committee of the Bar Association of Montgomery County and is a past member of the Board of Governors of the Maryland State Bar Association (1996-1998).

Ann Jakabcin was selected for the field of Trusts and Estates Law. As Co-Chair of the Estates & Trusts Practice Group, she concentrates her practice in estate planning for large and small estates, lifetime wealth planning and estate and trust administration. Ms. Jakabcin is a frequent speaker and past recipient of the prestigious Excellence in Education Award from PESI, LLC, a leading organization that presents continuing education seminars. She is a past president of the Estate Planning Council of Suburban Maryland and currently serves on the Planned Giving Committee for Suburban Hospital.

Paul Stein was recognized as a top lawyer for the first time in Criminal Defense (Non-White-Collar) and Commercial Litigation, and for the second time in Family Law. He is Co-Chair of Stein Sperling’s Criminal Law and Family Law practice groups and concentrates his practice in the areas of complex contested family law matters and criminal defense. Mr. Stein is a fellow to the American College of Trial Lawyers and is board certified as a civil and criminal trial advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He is an adjunct professor in the trial practice program at American University’s Washington College of Law. Mr. Stein is also a member of the Board of Directors for Hearts & Homes for Youth in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Listed by Best Lawyers® since 2006, Steve Widdes was recognized again as a top lawyer in Trusts and Estates Law. He is Co-Chair of Stein Sperling’s Estates + Trusts practice group and works with clients in the areas of estate planning, estate and trust administration, and tax and business succession planning. Mr. Widdes is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) and currently serves on the Endowment Planning Committee for the Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation and on the Planned Giving Committee for the Jewish Social Service Agency (JSSA).
