Under the Maryland Open Meetings Act, before a public body goes into a closed session, the presiding officer must complete a "written statement" of the reason for closing the meeting, citing the relevant authority under Section 10-508(a) of the Act, and listing the topics to be discussed. The Attorney General has prepared a form for this purpose. Stein Sperling's municipal law department has slightly modified the form to include additional fields to help a public body subsequently prepare the requisite "summary" of the session that it must include as part of its publicly available minutes. Stein Sperling's Statement for Closing a Meeting Form is available online.

Ron Bolt authored an article on this topic titled "Open Meetings Act Update" for Municipal Maryland magazine's March 2012 issue.
